About Us

The Mission Motif emerged from a concept designed by John Benthal and his partner Bob Nelson in December 2003. John’s early interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement surfaced in the late 1980s as he studied Art History at The University of Illinois at Chicago. While living in the inner-city of Chicago and being inspired by the astonishing architecture & designs of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, John started collecting Arts and Crafts furniture and lighting, and became an enthusiast for its philosophy and ideals.

After leaving Chicago to move to Atlanta, John partnered with Bob Nelson to fill a void in the South and together they opened “The Mission Motif.” It was soon discovered that The Mission Motif became much more than craftsman home furnishing store. …"We became a lifestyle that was inspired by the Arts & Crafts philosophy of the likes of William Morris and Elbert Hubbard. "

Today, The Mission Motif truly enjoys being a resource for the Arts and Crafts society in Atlanta, GA and all around the country. We support a portfolio of some of today’s finest artisans and designers that have been inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement. We gain the same personal satisfaction in our work, as the individual talented craftsmen do in building or designing their work. We also do our best to take care of our regular customers.
