Canal Dover Leather Types – A Complete Breakdown

Purely Protected

Purely Protected leather reduces the scratching, fading, staining, and color variation found in aniline leathers. This collection takes on the aesthetics of highly sought-after aniline, wax, or oil leathers — with the durability of protected or pigmented leather.

Aniline

A gorgeous wax crackle leather with an ageless, old-world look. Aniline-dyed and treated with oil and wax for a unique crackle effect, this leather is made from select European cowhide that showcases natural characteristics and improves with age, developing a rich distressed patina.

  • Buttery texture with vibrant aniline dye and distinctive oil-and-wax crackle finish
  • Matures beautifully over time — will naturally fade and develop a distressed patina
  • Expect color variation from hide to hide
  • Natural characteristics such as scars, belly wrinkles, scratch marks, and insect bites are signatures of genuine leather

Pigmented

Pigmented leather is sprayed with pigments to create a uniform appearance, covering the natural characteristics of the hide. This process prioritizes protection and consistency over natural aesthetics.

  • Easy to clean with mild soap and water
  • Superior resistance to fading and stains
  • Resists wear in high-traffic applications

Semi-Aniline

Semi-aniline leather is treated with a slightly pigmented dye and a thin protective coating, giving it a uniform color while keeping the natural grain partially visible. The protective layer makes it more durable and resistant to stains and wear than full aniline.

Crypton Protected

Protected with a built-in Crypton® finish for excellent cleanability and sustainability. With a waxy, firm hand, this performance leather celebrates the natural markings only found in genuine leather — and will develop a time-tested story of casual luxury with a slowly evolving patina.
